FAQs
Got a question? Drop it on our message board, and if it's a good one, well include it here.
Q: When is spring break? When is summer break?
A: Seems like people always ask this question, so I'll address it here. Spring break is anytime from mid-February through late-April, though mid-March is usually considered peak week. It depends on the individual schools' break schedules. If for some reason you really want to go when you think the most people will be "there" (wherever that may be), then go either the 2nd or 3rd week of March. Summer break is anytime from late May through June, though the best time to go is usually the 1st or 2nd week of June. These dates change seemingly every year, because the schools change their dates, but in general, mid-March and early/mid-June are your best bets.
Q: Where are spring break 2007 hotspots?
A: It's a pretty safe bet that Cancun will be a very popular destination once again this year, as well as Acapulco, which draws a more international crowd. You might also want to check out Cabo and Mazatlan, which draws a smaller crowd than someplace like Cancun, but on peak weeks still have a good amount of students. Plus it's generally a cheaper spring break destination as well (especially compared to Acapulco).
Q: Where will MTV be for spring break 2007?
A: In the past few years, they've mostly been in Cancun, but they go lots of different locations to film, and it's never announced (at least, not till it's way too late for you to change your plans).
Q: Where is everyone going for spring break 2007?
A: It changes every year, depending on what's advertised the most and what is a good deal, etc., and no spring break travel provider is going to supply that information because it doesn't benefit them to do it. Even if they wanted to, that information likely wouldn't come in until everyone has already booked, so it would be moot.
Q: How do spring break travel providers offer such cheap packages?
A: Well, it comes down to quantity. A student travel provider will buy up rooms in hotels, and seats on the plane, all at a volume discount, and then they sell the space to you. So for a destination like Cancun where sales are fairly predictable, they can offer really great deals because they know that the space will be sold. Also, most of the really great prices you see are for shared rooms.
Q: Which travel provider is the best?
A: That depends largely on where you want to go. Student City is very well known, and they are probably the most popular trip provider for places like Cancun, and Mazatlan, but for Acapulco, you might also look into Bianchi-Rossi.
Q: What is a Party Package (aka Party Pass, Bracelets) and is it worth it?
A: 80% of the time, it's worth it because you are likely going to party every night you are there, and if you don't have a party package, you're gonna wait in line longer and pay more to get in and to get drinks. The only time when it's not worth it is if you don't think your particular travel provider will have the parties you want to go to (this is really hard to research beforehand because it's just not something you can know until you're down there) or if you won't be there long enough to make it worth your while (almost all party passes are for a week only -- in fact, I've never heard of any for any other length of time). FYI: You don't have to buy the party package of the travel provider you're using. You're free to buy anyone and everyone's if you want, and you don't have to buy it beforehand; you can buy it onsite if you want, although I've had many experiences where people were looking all over for the people selling the party passes and that became like a full day event for them (it might also cost you more, and be very careful of who you get it from. There are lots of scammers for things like that).
Q: What is the legal drinking age in Mexico?
A: 18. Yeauuh.
Q: Do I need a passport to travel?
A: As of 12/17/06 -- this is changing next year, so be sure to check with the passport office. I'm not gonna answer something that is in the midst of a huge shift. But let's just say it will be a lot harder to travel next year, and that different destinations have different rules, so always check what you need for that particular country.
Q: Should I travel with a spring break travel provider or book my own trip? Which is cheaper?
A: Well, that depends on what kind of trip you want and how much money you have at your disposal. If you are swimming in money (in which case we suggest you send us some), then you might want to book your own so you can get the most customized trip possible, but if you are poor (and let's not kid, you can't be that poor if you're going on spring break), then a trip by a student travel provider is probably the best deal, not to mention pretty easy and comes with travel insurance (may cost extra), onsite staff and all that stuff that you wouldn't really think about otherwise.
Q: How do I travel VIP?
A: When spring break companies have VIPs, these are usually the people that sold trips for them (campus reps), and did a decent job of it. Different companies have different programs (yes, duh) so check them all out if you are interested in going this route and compare. If you sell enough trips you get to go free and get in all the parties free and VIP (no lines, which is awesome), and you can even make money if you are that motivated. Shoot, if you're that much of a salesman, don't forget to drop our name along the way dawg!
Q: Is it too early to plan for spring break 2008?
A: Absolutely not. The sooner you book the better deal you get. We suggest you book before December for the best deals (prices usually go up mid-December), or if you are the risk taker type, wait till the very very last minute and there might be good last minute deals (or not).
